La Casa Azul

La Casa Azul Bookstore located at East 103rd Street and Lexington Avenue; the first-ever bilingual book store in East Harlem. The name "La Casa Azul" was inspired by Frieda Kahlo's

original house, now a museum in Mexico City, it means "the blue house."

The Founder and owner of La Casa Azul BookStore is Aurora Anaya-Cerda. She has a private supporter that would match her fundraising efforts. So, she decided to raise $40,000 in 40 days! She had to prove that she really wanted her book store dream to become a reality. Before all of this success, Aurora grew up in Los Angeles, California. Where she lived it wasn't that safe, so she wasn't allowed to go outside and play, even though a park was right across the street. She had no video games or computer so she couldn't entertain herself that way. How did she keep herself occupied in the house all day? Well, she read books of course!

She read books she could relate to. One of her best memories is reading a book that was about a boy and and a healing-woman who dealt with herbs and minerals, made her remember her own grandmother who was the community healer like this woman. Later in life Aurora became a middle-school teacher, working with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. She used bilingual books in her teaching so that her students could also relate to the books with things such as coming to another country, or speaking another language.

In La Casa Azul Bookstore bilingual books are exactly what you would find. Unlike other stores who only have one shelf full of Spanish and African-American authors, all of Aurora's shelves will be full of them.

She plans to open her store in three months so keep an eye out! More information in our printed magazine coming out in 2012!!!

A Taste with Starr

Hey, It's Starr here again bringing you a new flavor.

We just finished eatting sushi for the first time. It was so yummy. We had salmon and tuna roll, wrapped in brownd rice and sesame seeds. We also tried a california roll, which is avacad and crab wrapped in seaweed and rice, it was yummy too.

The best one was the salmon and tuna roll, I was expecting tuna to taste like canned tuna, but it was fresh and full of flavor. The california roll could have been more flavorful, the rice was so wet I couldn't even pick it up with my chopsticks, I had to eat it off my napkin! It was my first time using chopsticks, and I learned pretty fast!

With the sushi came soy sauce, ginger and wasabi. I don't like spicy stuff, so I did not taste wasabi, but my internship buddies really liked it. I tried the ginger, it was good and tangy like a lemon. After everything, I realy like sushi, it was so good and it felt like I was in heaven.

A Taste With Starr

Hey! It's Starr aka your NYC Culture Reporter from Free Your Star Magazine. So, do you wanna go on a tasty journey? Join me, Starr, for a taste of paradise. I'm going to be here tasting food from different countries such as Italian,Jamaica,Japanese and India. My first journey of "A Taste With Starr" is middle-eastern food. It was my first time to taste falafel. It was very tasty, and it reminds me of a jerk and curry flavor with a little touch of lemon.

To see the video of me and my internship buddies tasting falafel it's below. Stay tuned for more, you can also go to Facebook

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour, 45 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour, 60 minutes

Ingredients:
•1 cup dried chickpeas or 16 oz. can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans.
•1 large onion, chopped
•2 cloves of garlic, chopped
•3 tablespoons of fresh parsley, chopped
•1 teaspoon coriander
•1 teaspoon cumin
•2 tablespoons flour
•Salt
•Pepper

Preparation:

Place dried chickpeas in a bowl, covering with cold water. Allow to soak overnight. Omit this step if using canned beans.

Drain chickpeas, and place in pan with fresh water, and bring to a boil.

Allow to boil for 5 minutes, then let simmer on low for about an hour.

Drain and allow to cool for 15 minutes.

Combine chickpeas, garlic, onion, coriander, cumin, salt and pepper (to taste) in medium bowl. Add flour.

Mash chickpeas, ensuring to mix ingredients together. You can also combine ingredients in a food processor. You want the result to be a thick paste.

Form the mixture into small balls, about the size of a ping pong ball. Slightly flatten.

Fry in 2 inches of oil at 350 degrees until golden brown (5-7 minutes).

Stephanie Slatt

Stephanie Slatt is a very talented young lady. She stopped by L.I.M College and talked about her design. She is making a cool scarf. Not just any scarf, I'm talking about a scarf that protect you from the rain. Now, you're thinking how a scarf is going to protect you from the rain. Well, Stephanie has all those details, while she was talking about her lovely design, me and Brianna are taking notes, and asking questions.

My first question was "What type of materials do you use for your scarf?"

Stephanie said she uses any type of materials, she just wants them to be breathable, comfortable, and cool.

My second question was "Do you think in the next 5 years your scarf will be more popular than an umbrella?"

Stephanie said that's her goal to have the scarf be more popular than an umbrella. For her creation she wants to collaboration with VF Corp, who owns brands Nautica & John Varvatos.

My last question was "Did you ever think of putting your designs in production?"

Stephanie said her friend's brother clothing line called " So Official." She made a few tee shirt graphics and also designed the logo for the company.

Now, after you finish reading this stay tuned for the full article of the Stephanie Slatt written by Brianna Elcock a.k.a The Senior Editor.

Hey, what's up, my name is Kiyoshi, Free Your Star's Media Manager. Every week I will be posting music playlist we are working to. First up is Radio Rose (check out full article on her in our January issue!).

Born in Brooklyn, where she currently spins at private fashion parties and lounges. The DJ she worked with in the past was Jasmine Solano, who is a rapper and a DJ, she also worked with DJ Lady Shellez who spins on 105.1.

She fell in love with the music in the club and shortly after her boyfriend DJ Sure Shot, and that’s how she learned how to become a DJ. Her favorite hit right now is Rihanna's We Found Love. The type of genres she plays are moombahton, reggae, disco to indie-rock. Her favorite DJ right now is Spinderella and Beverly Bond.

crop tops

A crop top is a shirt that rises a little higher than a regular shirt and/or falls off the shoulder. This is my favorite shirt because you can just about wear it at anytime with almost anything. I would call this a City girl look but it can work for all girls if they style it right.

Do's & Don'ts of Summer Shorts!

With the arrival of hot weather (& Memorial Day) comes time for the do’s and don’ts of summer shorts. We all have those days where our fashion is not completely on track, here is a basic checklist every woman needs to look back to; just to make sure you look as great as you deserve to look this summer. xo Kiara

The Do’s

Where To Find This Look:

Floral Prints: A must have. Not only are they cute but they go with just about any other pattern.

Advice: Although floral prints look great with patterns stay away from colors that clash… royal blue and orange, green and red, etc…

Look: Black thin flowy tank paired with floral print shorts and combat boots. Finish the look for cool summer night with a cute sleeveless cardigan.
American Eagle outfitters

$24.95

More For Less:

Forever 21

$13.80

Bermuda Shorts: Although it may seem as though Bermuda shorts may not be very flattering for every height, they can be more then figure flattering for all shapes. Bermuda's cut right above the knee (For any gal) elongates your legs.

Advice: For pear shaped, and thicker women this is a great figure flattering choice. Stay away from tight fitting shirts

Look: A great tucked in oversized shirt Bermuda shorts and sandals - or get a little flirty with a strappy wedge.

Old navy

$19.50

More For Less:

Forever 21

$14.50

High Waist Shorts: High waist shorts are a good idea for most body type. It helps hide uninvited weight in the mid drift and makes your waist look tiny. It gives woman hips and hides muffin tops.

Advice: These shorts look good with just about anything; crop tops, tanks, and oversized shirts. Make sure you look twice in the mirror; some things need an extra look.

Look: high waist shorts netted stockings combat boots and a cute cropped shirt.

American Apparel

$58.00

 Forever 21

$12.80

The Dont’s

Are your pants to tight? Can’t breathe in your short? Never wear shorts that Don’t fit. Please ladies rewind and choose different shorts to wear!

Never wear shorts with unnecessary giant belts. They kill the look you’re going for and like I said, just an unnecessary accessory. Giant belts are also very bad for curvy women, it brings to much attention to the wrong part of your waist.

Lastly don’t wear tacky out dated shorts with too many embellishments.  Ladies, if your first thought is “these shorts are not cute,” you’re probably right.

On our latest venture around the City, we set out on a search for the best lipstick - rich pigment and moisturizing were high on our list.  At Sephora we chose narrowed it down to four shades: pink, red, purple and nude. Smashbox, Makeup Forever, Urban Decay, Kat Von D, and Sephora brand hit the high marks.  Prices vary for you budget-friendly fashonista's!

Makeup Forever was our favorite out of all, the red lipstick was red and not orange like most.

Though the colors are beautiful, we didn't like Smashbox Red lipstick - -too much orange for our taste. 16$

Makeup Forever was our favorite and had rich colors and very moisturizing. $18 and so worth it !

Urban Decay pink and nude made us weak in the knees . . . 22$

Though the brands are most a little expensive we have something affordable just $12 and its very moisturizing and I adore the rich color.

Still on the hunt for the classic red and Kat Von D got the job done! Her Bambi Pink was also one of my favorites! The lipstick stays on long but not that moisturizing.
